HardiPlank®

This cement-fiber product has been around for quite a few years. It is also referred to as HardiHome® The product has most recently made a name for itself as a replacement alternative for Louisiana-Pacific composition siding products. The installation instructions have undergone revision on at least 3 occasions since 1998. The files contained here-in represent the most recent addition and were obtained from the internet at the James Hardie web site.

We consider this material to be “young” as far as general use is concerned. We note that the installation instructions have a specific exclusion “James Hardie will assume no responsibility for water infiltration within the wall.”

We have seen our first problems with this material in recent months. Photographs are attached that show fungi growing out from behind the siding. We were not present when the siding was removed. Our examination indicates the fungi was not growing out of the siding but from a 2” X 4” stud wall member behind it. There was apparently no moisture retarder or builder’s paper installed between the siding and the stud framing. Here are the connections to this product.
