Caulk Confusion

Which caulk is best?  Rubber caulks provide good adhesion and water resistance, but are sticky and hard to tool, and they shrink.  Use them to seal and repair gutters and flashing, filling cracks in asphalt, and around doors and windows.  Use outdoors: the solvents are hazardous.

Water-base latex caulks are easy to apply, tool and paint - and best used indoors on minor gaps.

Silicone caulks are waterproof and adhere to almost anything, but are messy and hard to tool.  Use indoors and out, especially around sinks, tubs and showers, and on exterior trim and nonporous materials.

Polyurethane is ultra-durable, highly adhesive, waterproof, and flexible.  Poly can be painted, but it's expensive and hard to tool.  Use to seal joints in concrete, repair masonry siding, and to bridge gaps, especially between porous and nonporous materials..
